In all sport and fitness activities, the body is under more strain and how we use the body during exercise can make a significant difference to our performance.
We are designed to move and use the body in a particular way. If we distort this natural design, especially during the extra effort used in exercise, we add an enormous amount of pressure to our body which can result in an increased likelihood of strain, injury and less efficiency which can affect performance and recovery.
The effort we make needs to be enough for the activity without the added effort/tension that can be damaging – for example when pushing ourselves it can be easy to hunch the shoulders, fix in the hip joints, grit the teeth, tighten the neck etc, which all add very unnecessary tension and compression to our body that will actually work against our goal.
The Alexander Technique teaches us how to move according to our design and increase our awareness of how we think and move in everyday life as well as in sport.
Central to the Technique is recognising that how you use yourself affects the way you function. Improved body use means minimum effort for maximum efficiency.
The pressure of performance and the repetitive nature of sports and exercise make it all the more important that we use ourselves well, so that we perform at our best and avoid injury.
The Alexander Technique can enhance performance by:
improving balance and coordination
promoting freedom of movement
reducing the risk of injury
The benefits of the Alexander Technique apply to everyone, from the complete beginner to the professional athlete and can be applied to any sporting activity, such as, running, cycling, swimming, tennis, golf, skiing, horse riding, football, and cricket.
Here’s what a few people have said:
"As an ex international fell runner and dancer I think it’s fair to say my body has suffered a certain amount of mis-use! I have spent an enormous amount of money over the years on physio and podiatry and only wish I had discovered Julia and The Alexander Technique sooner.
Through Julia I now have a new awareness of my body and some of the unhelpful habits I've developed over the years. I'm confident that by utilising and developing this awareness I can continue running and dancing without the niggling injuries that have plagued me in the past.
"It feels good to now be able to guide my body in a better, healthier way. I have now broken the cycle of gritting my teeth and pushing on regardless and then getting myself patched up in order to repeat the same destructive process again! There is now a real sense of freedom and pleasure in my movement, which I have always known deep down was possible, I just didn't know what was preventing me accessing it!" Joanne
Through Alexander Technique lessons with Julia I am far more aware of how I hold myself both at work and when training. I am an active runner and found that my improved understanding and awareness of my body made long training sessions for the marathon easier to complete and recover from; my times improved and have had significantly less strain and injury as a result. I would wholeheartedly recommend the Alexander Technique, and Julia, to anyone, and especially people who are engaged in active sport." Nick
"Of all the things I have done to improve my running, the Alexander Technique has had the biggest impact." Jo
